A fire burning in the great fireplace in the dining room

A winter stay in the Gorges du Loup, by the fire

Winter by the fire.

The great fireplace, the winter menu and the gorges back to their quiet self, less than 30 km from Nice.

Winter stay

A real log fire.

The Auberge des Gorges du Loup reopens in mid-December for winter stays in the hills behind Nice: quiet rooms, a dining room with a great fireplace and a homemade winter menu, less than 30 km from Nice. The gorges are peaceful again, and both the Nice Carnival and the Fête des violettes (violet festival) are close by.

A dining room with a great fireplace and a winter menu

The rustic dining room is built around a great fireplace, where a fire burns all winter. The homemade winter menu puts slow-cooked dishes and local meats first: pork cheeks, duck leg, beef fillet and flank steak, with seasonal sauces and sides.

The signature dishes stay on the menu all year round; only the sauce and the garnish change. For the full menu, see our traditional restaurant in Tourrettes-sur-Loup.

Why spend the winter in the Gorges du Loup?

For the peace and the light. The gorges are empty, the river runs high, you can walk the trails to Gourdon and the Saut du Loup without meeting many people, and the hilltop villages have no queues. The climate in the hills stays mild compared with the Alps, 25 minutes from the sea.

The auberge sits on the banks of the Loup, 8 km from Tourrettes-sur-Loup, 12 km from Grasse, 17 km from Saint-Paul-de-Vence and less than 30 km from Nice and Cannes. Explore by day, then come back for dinner by the fire.

Two events

Nice Carnival and Fête des violettes: two winter highlights

The Nice Carnival in February is the big winter event on the coast, less than 30 km from the auberge. Every year Jean-Pierre welcomes plenty of groups coming for the carnival, and the auberge makes a quiet base: go for the day, then sleep far from the crowds.

In early March, Tourrettes-sur-Loup celebrates the Fête des violettes, honouring the flower the village is famous for. Grasse, the perfume capital, is worth a visit all year round, and the ski resorts of the Pre-Alps are about 35 km away for a day in the snow.
